SUMMARY:Dr Nandita Shah: Conquering Cancer ($10 ticket: full credit toward meal purchase)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Shah’s mother died of cancer when she was just 25 and her mother only 50. She understands how devastating cancer is\, how much fear it invokes\, and the suffering involved. \nCancer\, which was a rarity in the past\, has become ubiquitous now. Almost everyone has a family member with cancer. The treatment is as painful to the body as it is to the pocket\, and it looks like there’s really no way out. On hearing the diagnosis ‘cancer’\, the immediate response is one of panic. Family and friends get somewhat desperate to explore every sort of curative solution. Everyone becomes a therapist or counselor. \nDr. Shah believes that it is crucial to demystify this dreadful disease so we have clarity on its prevention even before its onset. And if it has already set in\, we can at least have the know-how on how to select the most appropriate line of action. \nJoin Dr Nandita Shah\, for an informative talk to clearly understand what cancer is\, why it is so common these days\, and what you can do to prevent it. You can also gain an insight into what chemotherapy and radiotherapy actually are\, the pros and cons\, and what you can do to heal effectively regardless of your line of treatment. \nThe talk is open to all with the hope of reducing cancer incidences and promoting survival rates. \nFor reservations\, please visit: http://bit.ly/GreenFareConqueringCancer\nTickets are $10 for a reservation\, with a $10 credit toward a food purchase on the day of the talk.

Because of those roots\, Danni has always loved real homemade cooked food prepared with fresh ingredients. When she moved to Virginia with her mother at age 7\, their busy lives did not leave a lot of time to cook dinner daily. Quick and fast foods became a part of life. By age 11\, she felt very self-conscious about her body because of the extra weight she had gained. Throughout her adolescence\, she struggled with her weight but always resorted to yo-yo diets and even diet pills. As we all know\, yo-yo dieting is an emotional roller coaster none of us want to be on. But why does it take us so long to get sick and tired of being sick and tired? \nIt was not until shortly after her 31st birthday on a trip to Virginia Beach\, Virginia\, something clicked for Danni. At that moment\, she MADE A DECISION to do whatever needed to be done to feel better about herself. Danni returned home and started organizing her life. She created a healthy meal plan for herself with a simple grocery list. Every week she committed time to shopping for fresh foods and meal prepping them at home. She learned that being ready was key to a successful journey. \nAfter 5 months of consistently eating right and maintaining an active lifestyle\, Danni lost 25 lbs and gain a new level of love and confidence for herself. Then she found veganism… Danni’s friend tagged her on a post on Instagram about an upcoming vegan challenge. She decided to sign up because she wanted to take her weight loss to another level after hitting a plateau. Plus\, she figured she could do anything for 21 days\, right? \nOn July 14\, 2014\, Danni started this challenge feeling very optimist about what results she would have. But by Day 3\, she was completely blown away when she weighed in 4 POUNDS LIGHTER! It was shocking because she had been eating a “healthy diet” of lean fish and chicken\, fruits\, vegetables\, green smoothies and yogurt daily. The challenge’s support group was so instrumental in her growth over the course of the challenge. The challenge offered suggestions on books and documentaries about a plant-based diet and a vegan lifestyle. After many hours of watching and reading\, Danni knew that staying vegan was no longer an option for her\, but her duty. \nSince then\, Danni has maintained a plant-based diet and is transitioning all areas of her life to agree more with a vegan lifestyle. Her new lifestyle is dear to her because she is a better person because of it. She has been able to maintain her 50 pound weight loss and no longer suffers from IBS. Some of the other benefits she has experienced as a result of her plant-based vegan diet: improved mental clarity and focus\, better quality of sleep\, increased energy levels\, better moods\, clearer skin\, more comfortable menstruation cycles\, and even reduced joint pain from a previous knee injury. \nBecause of her weight loss success\, Danni gets messages often from people seeking advice. She realizes that most people have the same questions about nutrition\, veganism\, and weight loss. She started DAM Good Vegan because she envisions a community of people that shares ideas of natural\, plant-based\, holistic ways of living that create a sustainable environment. We are here to leave this earth better than the way we found it. Danni believes that by choosing veganism\, you choose to love Mother Earth. \nDAM Good Vegan is committed to educating the community on plant-based nutrition & providing online coaching\, courses & meal plan programs. DAM Good Vegan is all about keeping it RAW and REAL when it comes to what we eat\, what we put on our bodies and the way we live our daily lives. \n“Food Be Thy Medicine” is what our brand motto. Eating a plant-based diet consisting mainly of raw foods plus some cooked foods provides a well-balance diet and excellent nutrition. We are here to educate the world on how to live more consciously and compassionately. Join the movement and learn how you\, too\, can reap the amazing benefits of a plant-based diet as well as create a more sustainable environment for generations to come.

SUMMARY:Movie Night at GreenFare: 'Cowspiracy' over dinner (two for 1 ticket)
DESCRIPTION:Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. \nAnimal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation\, water consumption and pollution\, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry\, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction\, species extinction\, habitat loss\, topsoil erosion\, ocean “dead zones\,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on\, almost entirely unchallenged. \nAs Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement\, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture\, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist. \nAs eye-opening as Blackfish and as inspiring as An Inconvenient Truth\, this shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet\, and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population. \nMeet others in the community who share your interest in healthy eating to transform lives and regenerate the environment while enjoying a delicious whole plant meal prepared with local\, seasonal\, organic ingredients! \nA two for one special is included this month!!! Buy one ticket\, and bring a friend for free: http://bit.ly/GreenFareCowspiracyAug14 \nThe GreenFare dinner will be: \n\nOrganic Avocado Kale Salad\nOrganic Summer Squash Casserole\nOrganic Blueberry Cobbler\n\nTips not included.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: Aysha Akhtar\, M.D.: Our Symphony With Animals
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk and book signing with Dr. Akhtar: Please reserve your free tickets here: http://bit.ly/GreenFareAkhta \nCombining medicine and social sciences\, Dr. Akhtar will show how deeply the well-being of humans and animals are entwined. \nTopics covered include eating animals\, animal companionship\, animal testing\, healing relationships with animals\, and interpersonal animal violence. The presentation looks at our relationships with animals as a whole and asks: what do we gain when we recognize our kinship with animals? Stories include: a former mobster who found a new path in life through one animal\, an industrial chicken farmer’s divided empathy for animals\, a Marine veteran whose PTSD improved with a dog\, a cattle rancher who became the first to create an animal sanctuary\, the NYPD’s new effort to combat animal cruelty\, and a serial killer’s path to animal cruelty. \nThrough storytelling and science\, Dr. Akhtar reveal what happens when we both break and forge bonds with animals. She will demonstrate how humans are neurologically designed to empathize with animals\, and how violence against them goes against our nature. In equal measure\, the love and friendship we give to other species biologically reverberates back to us. \nHer presentation will show how humanity’s compassion for animals is the next step in our species’ moral evolution and a vital component of our own health. \nBio: Aysha Akhtar\, M.D.\, M.P.H.\, is a neurologist and public health specialist and is on a mission to show that what’s good for animals is also good for humans! \nDr. Akhtar is the author of the new book\, Our Symphony With Animals.
